Inlays and onlays can be made with various materials such as gold or ceramic. This is the ideal treatment when loss of tooth structure is not too extensive. They are used when strength is needed and can be designed to distribute bite forces to decrease the chance of fracturing the tooth. They are far more superior than amalgam and composite fillings which are the less expensive alternative treatment. The procedure to get an inlay or onlay involves having an intraoral scan done. A computer generated design is then done and the inlay or onlay is milled in the office.
